Ada Foah

Today, let's take a journey to the east of Ghana, exploring the stunning Ada Foah and the Volta Region. Home to the breathtaking Wli Waterfalls and the iconic Maranatha Beach Camp, this area is truly a magical and remote part of Ghana.

Ada Foah is a must-visit if you're in Ghana. Although it's just a short ‘trotro’ bus ride east from Accra, you'll feel transported away from the hustle and bustle of the capital to a serene and tranquil destination. Ada Foah offers a variety of accommodations, whether you prefer the backpacking lifestyle or a more high-end stay.

For the backpacker, Maranatha Beach Camp is an ideal choice. Located right at the end of the beach before reaching the estuary's mouth, it's a unique spot. I recommend contacting the hosts prior to your arrival for assistance with transportation from the main town. The accommodation ranges from fully furnished rooms to beach huts on the sand. Meet Me There is another popular stay, a stunning eco-lodge between the villages that I highly recommend. This not-for-profit lodge supports the NGO ‘Dream Big Ghana,’ which works to improve the lives of local people. The restaurant offers a truly authentic menu by Chef Ike, who identifies his cuisine as Afro-avant-garde. Given its popularity, it's wise to book ahead. Rum Island is another fascinating spot in Ada Foah. Known as Jubilee Island, it’s where a local crafts authentic rum from natural fruits like pineapples and bananas. You can visit the island by boat, taste the rums, and buy some to take home.

Ho & Wli Waterfalls

From Ada Foah, you can travel further east over the estuary to the Volta Region, a journey worth every moment. The Volta Region is home to Wli Waterfall, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, and Mount Afadjato, among other attractions.

Mount Afadjato offers a steep but rewarding hike to one of Ghana's highest peaks, home to more than 33 species of mammals and over 300 species of butterflies. The mountain provides a perfect spot to observe the surrounding beauty.

Wli Waterfalls, the highest waterfall in West Africa, is a must-see. Pronounced ‘vlee,’ the waterfall can be reached by following a flat yet stunning trail. Look up to see the numerous fruit bats nesting in the cliffs. If you're adventurous, bring your swimwear to get closer to the waterfall.

To visit these places, you'll need to stay in the local village of Wli near Hohoe and the Togo border. Though remote, accommodation options like Wli Water Heights Hotel offer a friendly stay with both Ghanaian and international meals.

Atimpoku

Heading back towards Accra, you reach Atimpoku, a small town along the Volta River, 54 miles northeast of Accra. Home to the Adomi Bridge, Ghana's largest suspension bridge, and the Akosombo Dam, a hydroelectric facility, Atimpoku offers a peaceful retreat with scenic views and numerous places to stay.

Bridge View Resort is an upmarket stay with the best views of the Akosombo mountains, seamlessly blending you into nature.

My personal choice is Aylos Bay, situated right on the river. It offers a tranquil and comfortable stay with lush gardens, a diverse restaurant, and entertainment options. Visit Aylos Bay.
